Approx. 42 houses formed the village, with just a handful of people escaping. One of the survivors, a guest-house owner, was not at home at the time, and returned to find his wife, children and parents all missing. The devastation covers an area more than a kilometer long and hundreds of meters wide. Forty bodies have been recovered and it is estimated another 20 are missing. Northwest of Port Moresby, the disaster occurred in the vicinity of the ExxonMobil LNG project. Thousands with customarily mud-smeared faces have gathered to mourn the loss of lives.
